Sports Related Concussions are traumatic injuries to the brain, that occur as a result of either a direct blow to the head or indirectly through a blow to the body.  It is estimated that 1.6 to 3.8 million sports related brain injuries occur in young athletes each year.  While these numbers seem high, it is believed that these numbers vastly underestimate the actual annual occurrence. It is felt that many concussions go undiagnosed due to failure to recognize the signs and symptoms by the coaches, athletes and there families. This can delay proper evaluation and treatment by qualified medical providers. In this article, I will outline some of the more common signs and symptoms, to help you identify a potential concussion, when it occurs.

Some common signs of concussion are disorientation, confusion, slow verbal response, personalty changes, poor coordination and imbalance. Common symptoms may include, headache, dizziness, nausea/vomiting, poor balance, visual changes, fogginess, difficulty concentrating, memory loss and drowsiness.

Mild brain injuries generally resolve, in an uneventful manner an seven to ten days. You should, however, rest and avoid any physical activity as well as tasks that require increased concentration or complex thinking. Your brain also needs rest to heal properly, so keep things simple for a few days until symptoms completely resolve. If symptoms persist or increase in intensity, you should contact your medical professional for immediate evaluation. If symptoms resolve, but then reoccur when you return to normal activity, you may be suffering from a post concussive syndrome. This is commonly caused by derangement of the upper cervical region, secondary to the concussion.

The Doctors at Sowa Chiropractic Associates are highly trained to address and resolve these problems and are often called on to participate in the care of these complex patients by other medical professionals.

A recent article was published by a UK Health Blog coining the term “iPosture”. Seems like a ridiculous concept, but is it really? Take a look around you next time you find yourself in a coffee shop or at an airport or in the waiting room of an office. The prevalence of this anterior head, rolled in shoulders and kyphotic upper back is everywhere! This leads to chronic strain on the back of the neck (the neck extensors) and can cause your chest muscles (pectorals) to become tight and shortened causing discomfort when trying to sit up straight. Good rule of thumb here is bring the device to your eyes, not the eyes to the device.

Prevention is key with avoiding postural strain, but if you find yourself suffering from neck/upperback pain please consult one of the Chiropractic Physicians at Sowa Chiropractic Associates for an evaluation.

I have posted a link to the article below, for those who are interested.

Start Your Morning Off On The Right Foot http://sowachiropractic.com/stretching/ http://sowachiropractic.com/stretching/#comments Mon, 09 Sep 2013 12:02:15 +0000 http://sowachiropractic.com/?p=496  What is the first thing you do when your alarm goes off at 6:00am?  Your answer should be stretch, but let’s back up a little and touch on why we should be stretching.  Do you ever wonder why your back seems so stiff in the morning after a night’s sleep?  Well, the explanation is [...]]]> knee-to-chest What is the first thing you do when your alarm goes off at 6:00am?  Your answer should be stretch, but let’s back up a little and touch on why we should be stretching.  Do you ever wonder why your back seems so stiff in the morning after a night’s sleep?  Well, the explanation is pretty simple.  The spine is made up of bones called vertebrae that are joined together by joints.  These joints contain small cushions called capsules that contain fluid called synovial fluid.  The more we move, the more our joints move which leads to increased lubrication of these capsules and therefore joints.

Now let’s get back to that alarm…as that dreaded tone interrupts our sleep, we awaken after spending 8 hours (in a dream world) lying down with very little movement.  This lack of movement leads to less fluid between the joints which makes us feel stiff.  How well does an engine work without oil?  The same is true of the joints in our body.  Synovial fluid is the body’s oil and movement facilitates increased fluid within our joints.

So back to that alarm disturbing our sleep.  You step out of bed and feel like you have aged 30 years over night.  Putting one foot in front of the other is an incredible effort and simple tasks like bending at the sink to brush your teeth seems nearly impossible.  You feel very stiff.  Well, after moving around for an hour or so we tend to loosen up and this is because we are adding movement back into the joints causing them to become hydrated.  Life is good.

My questions for you is, why not speed this process up and make stretching the first thing you do in the morning?  Stretching can take all of five minutes and can greatly improve you’re overall comfort level in the morning.  Don’t wait for an hour for the body to loosen up.  Take five minutes of your morning to speed that process up.

If stretching does not improve your morning discomfort then you may have other issues present that should be addressed.  Feel free to  contact our offices if you have any specific questions.

Now go stretch!

One of the more common side-effects that women experience during pregnancy is low-back pain. This is not surprising as during this time period the body is going through many physiological and endocrinological changes to prepare the women’s body for the developing baby. The lumbar (lower) spine begins to be forced forward putting anterior stress on the joints as the fetus increases in size. In addition to this forward pull on the lower back, the posture of the upper back begins to change to accommodate these changes.

As development continues, the pelvic region of the mother undergoes changes as the body begins to make room for growing fetus. Misalignment of the pelvic region will not only bring discomfort to the mother as added pressure is placed on the joints and the tissue, but it will also cause what is called intrauterine constraint. Intrauterine constraint is a reduction of available space for the developing baby. This can lead to added discomfort for the carrying mother and developmental changes for the fetus.

So what can a Chiropractor do to help with the changes experienced during pregnancy? A recent study showed that 84% of pregnant women who were experiencing low back pain and visited a Chiropractor had significant relief from their pain. After a brief orthopedic exam, a qualified Chiropractor can determine whether or not the pelvis and low back are in proper alignment. If it is determined that the discomfort you are experiencing is a result of lumbar or pelvic misalignment, then a highly trained Chiropractic Physician will perform a painless corrective manipulation of the area to relieve structural stress exerted on joints. Proper alignment ensures even weight-bearing and an even distribution of stress throughout this region.

Now, what if you are pregnant and not experiencing any back pain, can chiropractic still be a benefit? Absolutely! Normalizing the alignment of the pelvis makes the birthing process much easier. If the pelvis is twisted, the birthing canal will also be twisted. This contortion of the uterus can cause a breech position of the fetus which may lead to a cesarian section birth. In another study, Chiropractic manipulation proved 92% successful in reversing this breech position, thus avoiding a cesarian section. Having a Chiropractic Physician periodically align the pelvis can help ensure an easier delivery!

Have a Splitting Headache? Chiropractic Care Can Help

If you have a headache, you’re not alone. Nine out of ten Americans suffer from headaches. Some are occasional, some frequent, some are dull and throbbing, and some cause debilitating pain and nausea.

What do you do when you suffer from a pounding headache? Do you grit your teeth and carry on? Lie down? Pop a pill and hope the pain goes away? There is a better alternative.

New research shows that spinal manipulation – the primary form of care provided by doctors of chiropractic – may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck.

A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication.

Also, a 1995 study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches and that those who ceased chiropractic treatment after four weeks experienced a sustained therapeutic benefit in contrast with those patients who received a commonly prescribed medication.

Headache Triggers
But to get to the bottom of the problem, you first need to find out what is causing your pain. Headaches have many causes, or “triggers.” These may include foods, environmental stimuli (noises, lights, stress, etc.) and/or behaviors (insomnia, excessive exercise, blood sugar changes, etc.). About 5 percent of all headaches are warning signals caused by physical problems.

Ninety-five percent of headaches are primary headaches, such as tension, migraine, or cluster headaches. These types of headaches are not caused by disease. The headache itself is the primary concern.

“The greatest majority of primary headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck,” says Dr. George B. McClelland, a doctor of chiropractic from Christiansburg, VA, and member of the American Chiropractic Association’s (ACA) Board of Governors. “Today, Americans engage in more sedentary activities than they used to, and more hours are spent in one fixed position or posture. This can increase joint irritation and muscle tension in the neck, upper back and scalp, causing your head to ache.”

What Can a Doctor of Chiropractic Do?
Dr. McClelland says your doctor of chiropractic may do one or more of the following if you suffer from a primary headache:

    • Perform spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal function and alleviate the stress on your system.
    • Provide nutritional advice, recommending a change in diet and perhaps the addition of B complex vitamins.
    • Offer advice on posture, ergonomics (work postures), exercises and relaxation techniques. This advice should help to relieve the recurring joint irritation and tension in the muscles of the neck and upper back.

If you are experiencing headaches, take the first step towards relief and call Sowa Chiropractic Associates today!  You can reach the East Greenwich location at (401) 398-0958 or the Lincoln location at (401)728-8060.

Plantar Fasciitis – Pain that follows you every step of the way http://sowachiropractic.com/plantar-fasciitis-pain-that-follows-you-every-step-of-the-way/ http://sowachiropractic.com/plantar-fasciitis-pain-that-follows-you-every-step-of-the-way/#comments Wed, 15 May 2013 12:57:47 +0000 http://sowachiropractic.com/?p=446 Are you suffering from foot pain?  Do you experience discomfort or pain near your heel, especially upon taking your first step in the morning?  Chances are if you answered yes to these two questions you may be suffering from plantar fasciitis.  Most of us know what this condition is, but do you [...]]]>
Plantar-Fasciitis

Are you suffering from foot pain?  Do you experience discomfort or pain near your heel, especially upon taking your first step in the morning?  Chances are if you answered yes to these two questions you may be suffering from plantar fasciitis.  Most of us know what this condition is, but do you know how to go about relieving this pain and avoiding it in the future?  We at Sowa Chiropractic Associates do!

Plantar fasciitis is a condition that develops in the foot due to a biomechanical imbalance resulting in tension along the plantar fascia.  Most times the culprit behind plantar fasciitis is overpronation (flat feet).  When the natural arch in the foot flattens, the muscles on the bottom of the foot have to work twice as hard to produce the correct motion during a walking or running cycle.  Eventually the muscle fatigues and tightens up.  When this happen you begin to develop tender or painful points along the base of the foot along with pain in the bottom of the heel.  Every step now becomes tortuous as you are attempting to stretch this shortened muscle, especially as you push off with your toes.  If allowed to become a chronic condition, a heel spur may develop due to the stress of this plantar fascia muscle pulling on its attachment into the calcaneus (heel bone).

So how could Chiropractic help?  First off, a detailed history and exam must be performed to confirm that plantar fasciitis is truly what is causing your pain.  An X-ray of the foot may be ordered in order to rule out other possible suspects that may cause similar discomfort.  If confirmed through examination, soft tissue work will be performed to lengthen the muscle on the bottom of the foot.  In doing this, the amount of stress experienced with each step will be immediately reduced.  A combination of cold-laser and ultrasound therapy will be administered to help reduce inflammation.  A passive support will be applied to the foot in the form of Kinesio-Tape in order to provide structural assistance as the healing process begins.  This tape provides symptomatic relief in between treatments to help ensure the least amount of discomfort is experienced throughout the day.

Patient education is also an integral part in treatment of plantar fasciitis and will consist of icing, stretching and strengthening exercises.  An arch support may be introduced as well which will play a large role in avoiding reoccurrence of this problem in the future.

Our success rate at Sowa Chiropractic with treatment of plantar fasciitis is astounding.  Over time, we have been able to develop a very effective treatment protocol that not only eliminates present discomfort but helps prevent any repeat flare-ups in the future.  If you are ready to get rid of your plantar fasciitis once and for all, then give either of our offices a call today!

Chiropractic and Cycling http://sowachiropractic.com/367/ http://sowachiropractic.com/367/#comments Fri, 05 Apr 2013 15:01:09 +0000 http://sowachiropractic.com/?p=367 Chiropractic and Cycling

Spring is upon us and with that comes an increase in activity.  Incorporating some form of aerobic activity into our busy schedules is something that everyone should attempt to do.  One of the lower impact forms of aerobic activity that is becoming increasingly more popular is cycling.  When using proper form, cycling can be extremely low impact, but the key here is proper form.  As with any form of exercise, proper form will not only enhance your performance, but will also minimize the risk of injury.

As you begin to resume your cycling training or exercise regiments, are you suddenly experiencing discomfort?  Do you have numbness in the hands or fingers or burning and tightness in the shoulders and/or neck?  Has your lower back felt stiff or painful as you increase your mileage?  If any of these questions elicited a response of “Yes”, do you know how to begin addressing these issues?  How about start with a Chiropractor?

Chiropractors are highly trained in biomechanics or the study of structure and function by means of the methods of mechanics.  Many times the onset of new symptoms that begin with the initiation of an activity is due to a biomechanical issue.  A full exam of the muscles, joints and movement patterns of the area involved should be performed in order to identify the exact cause of the discomfort being experienced.  The approach to many biomechanical issues involves precise chiropractic adjustments to free up any possible joint restrictions  that may be limiting your range of motion, myofascial work to identify any muscles that may contain trigger points or may be in spasm and proper stretching and strengthening instruction to not only  help relieve the present discomfort but also prevent it in the future.

If you are experiencing pain or discomfort while performing a certain exercise, the solution should not be to avoid participating in that exercise.  The solution should be to have a Chiropractic Physician examine you, correct the issue and assist in preventing recurrent discomfort in the future.

Vitamin D Deficiency – An Epidemic http://sowachiropractic.com/vitamin-d-deficiency-an-epidemic/ http://sowachiropractic.com/vitamin-d-deficiency-an-epidemic/#comments Fri, 22 Mar 2013 13:27:26 +0000 http://sowachiropractic.com/?p=360 Vitamin D Deficiency – An Epidemic

The health benefits that Vitamin D provide has been no secret. For years we have seen many of our foods fortified with this essential vitamin, but are you still getting enough? Statistics say we are not. Recent studies report that 60-75% of the US population has deficient vitamin D levels. That is a shocking statistic that carries very negative health implications. Before you get too nervous, let’s take a look at some of the symptoms you may be experiencing if you are deficient in Vitamin D:

- muscle or bone pain
- osteomalacia (brittle bones)
- low energy levels/mild depression
- hypertension
- diabetes
- multiple sclerosis
- many forms of cancer
- many more

Many of us are probably experiencing one or more of those symptoms but have you addressed why you might be experiencing them? A good start might be your vitamin D levels. Your blood levels can be tested to give you an exact base line for your vitamin D levels, however not necessary in most cases. I find it to be a fairly safe assumption that most if not all can benefit from Vitamin D supplementation. Now, while there is controversy as to how much Vitamin D one should be taking, there is a common agreement that reaching toxic Vitamin D levels is very difficult to achieve. With that being said you should contact a health professional to receive a recommended dosage for you personally.
You can also increase your Vitamin D intake in the following ways: eating mushrooms, most fish, eggs, milk and orange just and also by being exposed to sunlight.
Get out there and be proactive. Increase your Vitamin D levels and look forward to experiencing reduced systemic inflammation, protection and lubrication of your bones, teeth and hair, the prevention of chronic disease such as cancer, improved mood and on and on.

Happy Spring!
